operators seat to an exciting career as a heavy equipment operator. You will receive over 240 hours of theory and practical training and will learn how to safely operate a bulldozer, backhoe/loader, excavator and a compactor. With only 5 students per class, you receive the best hands-on training!

Heavy Equipment Operator Course Outline

1. In-class theory (42 hours)

  • Orientation to the trade
  • Identification of heavy equipment
  • Personal safety and construction site safety
  • Equipment maintenance and inspection
  • Hazard assessment
  • Volume calculations
  • Site preparation
  • Introduction to blueprints
  • Soil assessment
  • Trench digging and shoring
  • Grade checking
  • Basic rigging
  • WHMIS
  • First-aid and fire extinguisher training
  • Basic operation of the equipment

2. In-vehicle Operation Training

  • Perform pre-operational checks
  • Basic maintenance
  • Proper use of hydraulics
  • Drive, turn and back the equipment
  • Safe removal of material
  • Rig and hoist materials
  • Safely trench and shore the trench
  • Assess grades
  • Calculate load volumes and weights
  • Running commentary skills
  • Perform site preparation

About The Equipment

You will be trained to operate industry standard heavy equipment. This includes:

  • Excavator
  • Backhoe/loader
  • Bulldozer
  • Compactor

These pieces are the most common types of heavy equipment used on a construction site.

This program is approved as a vocational program under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005.
