That’s where Tri-County Training comes in. Since 1978, we have offered the most complete and comprehensive truck training courses in Ontario through our training facilities. Course Outline (A-Z License)
Your course will take 8 weeks to complete on a full-time basis (part-time courses are also available). The course covers the following breakdown:
1. In class theory- 65 hours
Your course starts with Hours of Classroom Instruction. The course is taught by qualified Instructors that are experts in the field of transport training. The following are some of the topics you will be covering:
- Two-day approved air brake endorsement
- Basic vehicle operation
- Border crossing procedures
- Cargo security/Weight Distribution
- Log books & hours of service rules
- Customer service
- Dangerous goods
- Defensive driving
- Fire extinguisher training
- Map reading
- Night driving
- Pre-trip inspection
- Skid control training
- First-aid training
- Trip planning
- Fuel saving techniques
- Pre-trip inspections
- Coupling & uncoupling
- Handling driver fatigue
- Safety & Professionalism in the Industry
2. In-Yard Training -25 hours
This part of the course is where you start getting your hands on the trucks. For 25 hours you will be learning how to put the classroom theory section into practice. The following are some of the procedures you will be covering:
- Pre-trip inspections / circle check
- Air brake inspections
- Coupling / Uncoupling procedures
- In-cab inspections
- Weight distribution
- Sliding trailer axles
- Sliding fifth wheels
- Preventative maintenance
3. In-Vehicle Training
This part of the course is where you will learn how to drive the truck in all types of traffic conditions. It will take about 6 weeks to complete this section. You will receive 55 hours of Personal Instruction Time behind the wheel. You will also receive 15 hours learning to back up and a minimum of 72 hours of observation time. We have 9 Trucks and 15 Trailers. Each truck is dualĀ controlled for your safety. The following are some of the topics you will be covering.
- Learn to double clutch a multi-gear transmission
- Turns in light traffic
- Backing straight
- Backing between trailers
- Backing to our own docks
- Parallel parking
- Freeway driving
- City driving
- Stopping and starting on hills
- Turns in heavy traffic
- Running commentary driving
- Passing and overtaking
- Gear recovery techniques
- Preparing for a company road test
- Preparing for a Drive Test road test
4. Yard Work Practice
You will be required to practice your Pre-Trip Inspection, Coupling and Uncoupling procedures for a minimum of 30 hours in our yard. This practice will enhance your knowledge and routine of the daily inspections required by every driver before embarking on a trip no matter what the distance. Remember the saying “PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT”.
5. Skid control training – one day (9 hours)
- Skid control in wet and dry conditions
- Cornering techniques
- Jack knife control and recovery
- Counter steering
- Evasive action
6. Forklift Training
You will receive a 9 hour Certification Forklift Course that will teach you the proper procedures for the safe operation of a Counter Balance Propane Powered Forklift. This training prepares you whenever the need arises for you to do any loading or loading of your own trailer. It also ensures you that you have the knowledge if the person loading your trailer is doing it properly to avoid over-weight fines and that the load will not shift while you are driving. You will also receive a wall and wallet certificate on completion. The following are some of the topics that will be covered both in theory and hands on.

About The Equipment
All trucks have crew cabs designed for up to 3 students so you can choose one on one or group training. To ensure your truck training course is a safe one, all trucks are equipped with dual braking system on instructor’s side for tractor and trailer brakes. In addition, all trailers carry various levels of weight to show you how shifting, stopping and starting procedures change under differing load conditions.

Accreditation
Upon completion from Tri-County Training, you will receive:

This program is approved as a vocational program under the Private Career Colleges Act, 2005.
